A Message from the General Editor

Welcome to Routledge Resources Online: Polymers, Materials, and Technology.

Since the conceptualization of polymers in the 1920s, great progress has been attained in both the basic aspects and applications of polymers, polymeric materials, and polymer technology. Now, they have spread over a wide range of research fields, including life sciences, electronics, and many more.

In this RRO, more than 150 topics are covered at the stage of the first launch, and new topics will be incorporated as we expand to cover further diverse aspects of polymers, polymeric materials, and polymer technology. The contents of each topic will be updated, and new topics will also be included, as needed. This RRO is divided into 9 sections as indicated below:

  • Polymer Characterisation, Properties, and Morphology
  • Polymer Technology and Engineering
  • Industrial Applications of Polymers
  • Polymer Materials

These sections cover both fundamental aspects of polymer science and engineering as well as the diverse applications of polymer materials. Environmental issues of polymer materials are focused on as well.

The RRO aims to cater to a wide range of researchers, including young scientists such as graduate students and researchers who are not engaged in the related fields. All the editors hope that the RRO will be useful to obtain knowledge related to polymers, polymeric materials, and polymer technology.

 

Ikuyoshi Tomita, General Editor and Section Editor for Polymer Materials and Types of Polymers

Ikuyoshi Tomita is a Professor at Institute of Science Tokyo (former Tokyo Institute of Technology), Japan.  After his master’s degree from Kyoto University under the direction of Professors Takeo Saegusa and Yoshiki Chujo, he spent one more year as a Ph. D. candidate student there. He obtained an Assistant Professor position and joined Prof. Takeshi Endo’s research group in 1991 at Tokyo Institute of Technology, in advance to his Ph. D. degree in 1994. He was promoted to Lecturer in 1996, Associate Professor in 1999, and Full Professor in 2013 at Tokyo Institute of Technology. He also served as Associate Dean from 2018 to 2020 and a Council Member of Education and Research from 2024. His research interests focus on the development of new methods for polymer syntheses and polymer reactions. He is also interested in π-conjugated polymers, element-block-containing materials, nanostructured materials, and energy-related materials.  He obtained awards, including the Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2016). He is an Associate Editor of NPG Asia Materials, Editor-in-Chief of Future Materials, NTS, Japan, and Editor-in-Chief of Network Polymers, Japan.

 

Section Editors

Eiji Yuba, Encapsulation and Controlled Release Systems

Dr. Eiji Yuba is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering at Osaka Metropolitan University. He received his BS degree from the Department of Applied Materials Science, Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, in 2006. He received MS and PhD degrees from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He worked as an Assistant Professor of Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, from 2010 to 2017 and as an Associate Professor from 2017 to 2023 in the Department of Applied Chemistry, Osaka Prefecture University. Also, he stayed in the University of Chicago (Jeffrey A. Hubbell laboratory) as a visiting scholar in 2019. He served as Fellow for Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan from 2020 to 2023 and as an executive member of Osaka Metropolitan University from 2022 to present. In 2024, he internally moved to the department of Chemistry and Bioengineering as a Principal Investigator. His research interests are functional polymer-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications, including drug delivery, gene vectors, diagnosis and immunotherapy. He is an editorial board member of Journal of Controlled Release, Vaccines, and Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical Therapeutics.

Yuichi Ohya, Polymer Biomaterials & Biomedical Polymers

Dr Yuichi Ohya is a Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry, Materials, and Bioengineering at Kansai University. He graduated from the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, in 1989. Then, he started his academic career at the Faculty of Engineering, Kansai University. In 1993, he obtained PhD degree from Kyoto University. He was a visiting researcher at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996-1997. In 2008, he became a full professor. He is now the director of Kansai University Medical Polymer Research Center (KUMP-RC) of Kansai University. He received The Award of Japanese Society for Biomaterials (2017), and SPSJ (The Society of Polymer Science, Japan) Mitsubishi Chemical Award (2018). He is a Fellow of ICF-BSE (The International College of Fellows of Biomaterials Science and Engineering) (FBSE) since 2020. His research fields are biomaterials, functional polymers, biodegradable polymers, drug delivery systems, and supramolecular chemistry.

Davide Masato, Polymer Characterization, Properties and Morphology and Polymer Technology & Engineering

Davide Masato is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Padova (Italy). Dr. Masato’s research aims to advance precision polymer manufacturing knowledge, mainly focusing on injection molding. His research focuses on plastic product design, polymer processing technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and computer-aided engineering. His research is funded by NASA, US ARMY, REMADE (Department of Energy), and private companies. Masato teaches undergraduate and graduate engineering design, injection mold design, and computer-aided engineering classes. Masato’s research resulted in 45+ journal publications, 50+ conference presentations, 1 book chapter, and 3 patents.

Koji Takagi, Polymer Materials and Types of Polymers

Koji Takagi is an Associate Professor at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan.  He received Ph. D. in 1998 under the guidance of Prof. Endo and Prof. Tomita, from the Tokyo Institute of Technology.  In the same year, he started his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Nagoya Institute of Technology and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005.  His research mainly focuses on the polymer synthesis and polymer reaction.  He is also interested in the conjugated functional (luminescent, conducting, chiral) materials with potential application in optoelectronic devices.  He has had over 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

Atsushi Sudo, Polymer Synthesis, Polymerizations, Designed Polymers

Atsushi Sudo received his B.S. degree from the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo. He obtained his Doctorate in Engineering from the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, in 1997. In the same year, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) as an Assistant Professor. In 2002, he moved to the Molecular Engineering Institute (MEI) at Kindai University as a Lecturer and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. In 2011, he transitioned to the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Kindai University and was promoted to Professor in 2016. His research interests include the synthesis of bio-based polymers, curing reactions of multifunctional monomers, and visible-light-driven polymerizations.

Andriy Voronov, Sustainability & Recycling

Andriy Voronov is Professor of Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota, USA. His research expertise is polymer synthesis and polymeric materials with an emphasize on sustainable monomers and polymers from various natural/renewable resources, in particular, plant/vegetable oils, including biobased latexes and their applications as thermoplastic, thermosets, bioplastics, surfactants, surface modifiers, adhesives, coatings etc.

Voronov’s list of publication includes more than 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, 12 book chapters and 2 patents on biobased monomers and polymers.

Voronov completed his degrees in Ukraine, gaining PhD in Polymer Chemistry from Lviv Polytechnic National University. He was Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Bayreuth, Germany and NATO Fellow at the University of Ulm, Germany and Institute Charles Sadron in Strasbourg, France.
