ABSTRACT

Can’t subjects and verbs just get along? Be ye singular or plural, ye nouns shall bind together in number. Past-tense verbs almost always end in -ed, but watch out, present tense: your verbs change with the person. When verbs are plural in the present tense, they don’t need an s because the s is in the plural nouns. On the other hand, when verbs are matched with a singular noun, the verb needs the s (remember, singular nouns need an s on the verb in the present tense). If we recast Spires’s sentences with the singular she and he, we need to add an s to the verb.
