ABSTRACT

It was in the 1960s that some sporadic large-power multiphase (m > 3) a.c. variable speed drives surfaced. But only after the 1990s, with the advent of multiphase PWM inverters, did multiphase electric machine drive technology gain considerable academic and industrial heavy attention worldwide, mainly (so far) for electric locomotives traction, HEV, EV, and ship propulsion, more electric aircraft motor/generator drives, electric power steering, high-power compressors, large pumps, PMSG wind generators, etc.
